If you had the chance to live forever, would you take it?

2053 An old man, Viktor Erikson, lies on his deathbed. Alone and with no known relatives, he is tended to by Olivia, a nurse. He has only one request that she reads to him.

The request is not unusual, but the battered, leather-bound tome she must read is no ordinary book. Written in 1839, it chronicles the discovery of the fountain of youth by Morgana de la Motte – and Viktor Erikson.

What starts off as a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas in search of riches and eternal life soon transforms into something quite different a clash between two personalities bound by love and deceit, locked together by a terrible burden of necessity.

What lengths would you go to – and what price would you pay?

As Oliva reads through the ancient book, she discovers a quest for truth and meaning as Viktor and Morgana relive the greatest sufferings and sorrows of humanity, over and over again.

In such a timeless loop, can Viktor or Morgan save their own true selves? Or will their unstable alliance, forged on the fine line between love and hate, turn into a tangled web of deception?

Insensible Loss is a dark historical thriller, breathlessly following Viktor and Morgana through a centuries-long adventure. Switching between the present and the past, Peters’ masterful storytelling make this fast-paced, imaginative epic a bold exploration of a past spiraling out of control – and a future that has never been more uncertain.

The year is 2053 and Olivia, working towards her medical degree, is volunteering at a hospital that proclaims compassionately "no one dies alone" (NODA). During her volunteer shift an elderly man who has been struck by a vehicle is transported to the hospital and admitted under the name of John Doe. His prognosis is not good.

As part of his belongings, he has with him a soft leather type journal that, based on its wear and tear, has been utilized and read over and over again. The elderly man asks Olivia to start reading the entries of the journal to him. Its first entry is dated with the year 1839.

Insensible Loss by Paul Michael Peters is an exciting, adventurous and thrilling fictional story that involves a young lady by the name of Morgana and a young man by the name of Viktor. They both find themselves caught up in the age-old quest for riches. However, in addition to looking for Mayan gold, their quest involves the search for the elusive fountain of youth.

In addition to the quest for gold and eternal life, mixed into this gripping story are the human emotions of lust, love, trust, revenge, distrust, etc. which all make for a fascinating narrative. Additionally, the ending provided a significant and "didn't see that coming" twist which will further entertain the reader and perhaps cause a cheer for justice.

Insensible Loss is a very enjoyable novel that will quench the desire of the reader for an engaging book to read.

Insensible Loss a dark historical thriller eBook Paul Michael Peters Reviews

*I received a free ARC of this book. The choice to review and views expressed are my own.*

This book is superb.

The story is riveting, the characters unpredictable and fascinating, the twists deft and the writing flawless. I was unsure how the title related to the whole, until I looked up the definition above (Which is included at the beginning of the ebook, but my chose to skip for some reason!). Water indeed runs through the narrative, and loss does too; when not of life, or morals, or self.

The central narrative flips between Olivia, in a futuristic setting, reading aloud to Viktor as he dies, and the setting of the memoir she reads, from 1839. The hospital sections consider life, death and the humanity of no one dying alone. The ‘fictional’ chapters contain adventure (on and off the high seas), treasure, the search for the fountain of life, romance, intrigue and a whole lot of backstabbing between friends.

Trust, power, love and murder for various ends are ethically examined from different angles, and the extent to which power and money can corrupt even the purest people and motives. These themes are not preached at the reader but are embedded and woven in a gripping plot that twists and turns in unexpected directions.

Paul Michael Peters has come up with a new approach to the legend of the Fountain of Youth and his explanation and exploration of how it works, the decisions to be made and the consequences thereof is completely fascinating.

I’m keeping this review short, as I don’t want to give away too much about the book, as I want you to all read it and see for yourselves!

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any adult readers (some sex, a few murders, some quite gruesome) who like a well-written, unique action tale with deeper layers. 5 star fiction.
Did not even finish this one, not a good story.
If you had the chance to live forever, would you? Insensible Loss looks at the many lives of Viktor and Morgana Erickson. Jumping back and forth between the past and the future, the reader gets to see how having power over life and death changes a person. This book is different than something I might normally pick up, but once I started reading, I had to finish! Just when I thought I had it all figured out, there was a twist that had me shaking my head. Do NOT pass this book by...begin reading immediately!
"Insensible Loss" was a new take on the 'fountain of youth' idea, and I really liked how it played out. I think the author did a great job showing how different personalities would handle this opportunity in vastly different ways, and I especially liked how this technique allowed the book to be historical fiction over a long period of time, not focusing in on just one era. Some very unique, creative ideas here.

I've read books by Mr. Peters before, and as always, his style is what sticks out. If you've never read his books before, you are missing out. He has a rare, distinctive voice, and it's worth reading his books for that alone. But the plot and characters here are good too! )
I have read of of Paul Michael Peters' books - and this one ranks right up at the top of the list. It was fascinating and certainly did not end the way I thought it would. The back and forth between the history and the present was really well done. Some books are difficult to follow when going back and forth between history and present - but this was not the case with this book. I found it very realistic even though the subject matter is unrealistic. Really a great read. Look forward to more from Paul.
Paul Michael Peter’s novel “Insensible Loss” is a truly unique piece of literature that seamlessly combines a little bit of slightly futuristic fantasy and magic with a realistic story of empathy and the struggle of witnessing human suffering and the death process. I love the idea behind the organization that the main character in the book works as a volunteer for, known as NODA (No One Dies Alone). I was curious as to whether it actually exists and apparently it does, at least in some places. Of course, it is similar in many ways to the hospice volunteers I have known around our own area, but I like the NODA title even better.

Anyhow, back to the actual story, I found the characters engaging and interesting and found myself relating to them fairly quickly. I felt the pace of the storytelling was good and the writing was very well done. Novels like this are truly a pleasure to read and give you plenty of things to mull over even when the story has come to an end.
